CONNECTED

CATEGORY - REPORTAGE'

In all her glory, Mother Nature paints this beautiful story of connectivity between us and this intricate world we live in. In this place, few animals have been as vital to the Pacific experience as salmon. From grizzly bears to orca whales, more than 130 different species depend on the marine-rich nutrients that these wild salmon provide. Here, we see the numbers are strong, their presence telling us this ecosystem is healthy. A Guardian glides slowly across the river and the surface erupts in a swarm of red sockeye and violent white turbulence. While he is there only to observe and protect, we’re reminded how easily we affect the world around us.

THE TENDER SIDE

CATEGORY - WILDLIFE

Life of a bear in the wilderness is one locked in an endless struggle for survival. And a mother bear with a new cub, will work fiercely to keep her young one safe. But these bears are so much more than raw power. They are sentient beings with large personalities capable of compassion, humor, curiosity, devotion and even grief. And here, in moments like these, we witness the ability to be tender. This intimate connection between mom and cub will be the building block upon which this cub learns to communicate, socialize, love and survive.

As our world fell hostage to the restraints of a global pandemic, an unwanted solitude and feeling of abandonment engulfed our everyday lives. Here, a once bustling downtown city centre sat vacant of all signs of life. I stood alone, surrounded by these towering structures and felt their longing to be remembered; to be relevant again.

FROM THIS THRONE

CATEGORY - NATURE

An enthusiastic tussle between a lone eaglet and a pair of ravens ensued at the base of a nearby tree. I moved slowly to capture a clean line of sight when this magnificent creature flew into my peripheral. The massive wingspan unfolded and he shifted into his chair to assume a watchful position. His mere presence forced rapid resolve and he resumed a methodical scanning of the kingdom laid out before him.

WPC

The WPC was founded in 2013 as a cooperative effort by The Federation of European Photographers (FEP) and Professional Photographers of America (PPA). Its singular goal is to unite photographers in a spirit of friendship and cooperation.

The brotherhood and sisterhood of photography is a bond that transcends language, culture, and geography. That’s the foundation behind the World Photographic Cup, and one of a kind international team competition. Sure, there are lots of other competitions, but there is just one World Photographic Cup.

WHAT IS ACCREDITATION ?

PPOC
PPOC

Accreditation is a first level of achievement for an active member of the association and is achieved by submitting a portfolio to a Pan-Canadian PPOC (Professional Photographers of Canada) Evaluation Board.

This honor demonstrates that the artist has the ability to deliver imagery that is a "cut above" in this category of Scenic/Pictorial by capturing content that exemplifies impact, creativity, style, composition, presentation, mastery of colors, focus, lighting, subject, image quality and technique. These are the criteria evaluated by a panel of 6 nationally Accredited Judges.

In addition to other Merits Service and Merit Photos required, accreditation is required to earn a title of “Craftsman of Photographic Arts” and two are required for the title of “Master of Photographic Arts”.

2024 PHOTOGRAPHIC AWARDS

One of the cornerstones of the Professional Photographers of Canada is the PPOC Annual Image Salon. This juried exhibition showcases the best of the best. Within this Salon Exhibition, you will find the most creative, the newest and most cutting edge, and the finest technically executed images produced by our members.

This inspirational collection of images displays the level of excellence Canadian photographers have achieved. Some of the best photographic talent in the world lives and works in Canada, and enters this PPOC image competition in the hopes of being selected for the Salon Exhibition.

Active/Accredited members of PPOC are invited to submit images annually to a juried exhibition. A group of highly qualified judges, all of whom have obtained their Craftsman of Photographic Arts or Master of Photographic Arts designation, and have been trained as jurors, assemble to review submissions. These jurors have the monumental task of viewing in excess of 800 images, setting aside any personal bias and judging objectively, to determine those images worthy of being accepted into the Salon Exhibition.

From those submitted images deemed worthy of inclusion in the final Salon Exhibition, those which stand above the rest are awarded scores of Merit, and the small number which are deemed to be truly exceptional images are awarded the prestigious score of Excellence. Top images from the PPOC image competition move on to the Canadian selection committee for the World Photographic Cup(WPC).
